Bolton Wanderers Boss Steven Schumacher Reacts to Lincoln City Draw | EFL League One Analysis (2026)

A Hard-Fought Point: Steven Schumacher Reflects on Bolton Wanderers' Gritty Draw Against Lincoln City!

Steven Schumacher, the keen mind behind Bolton Wanderers, believes his team fully deserved the single point they snatched from their encounter with Lincoln City, and he credits their sheer graft and determination for it.

It was Sam Dalby who ultimately secured the draw for the Wanderers with a crucial late header, cancelling out Jack Moylan's earlier strike that had put the home side, Lincoln City, in front midway through the first half. For Lincoln, this match was a significant opportunity; a victory would have given them a powerful advantage in securing the second automatic promotion spot, as they were already six points ahead of Bolton with a game in hand.

Schumacher emphasized that Dalby's goal was a fitting reward for his squad's resilience. "It was a tough game," he admitted, "a good, competitive one. I thought we actually started really well, perhaps even the better team for the first 20 minutes, and we finished the game strongly too.

"The last 15-20 minutes, we looked strong, but in the middle part of the game, we really had to dig in and grind it out. It's never easy playing against Lincoln. They are incredibly effective at what they do – they put a lot of balls into your box, create sustained pressure, and possess dangerous players up front.

"It was difficult, but I'm so glad we came away with a point because of the effort and graft the lads put in. I genuinely believe they earned it."

But here's where it gets interesting... Moylan's goal, which arguably his excellent performance warranted, came somewhat against the flow of the game. Schumacher elaborated, "I felt we began the game better than they did. We were in control, but then the game became scrappy due to fouls, and the referee kept halting play. We actually felt there was a foul in the build-up to their goal.

"That's their style. They tend to build small moments of pressure and have been remarkably clinical. They might not always have a high expected goals (xG) figure, but they just find a way to score. They thrive in chaotic situations. I know their coach, Chris Cohen, and being effective in those moments is a big part of their strategy. Moylan's finish was great, but it probably wasn't against the run of play.

"I thought we managed the rest of the first half reasonably well. Then, at the start of the second half, they were probably on top until we settled down, made a couple of changes, and had to dig in again. We absolutely needed Jack (Bonham) to make a few key saves, which is so crucial."

Schumacher was equally pleased with the performance of goalscorer Dalby, especially seeing him reach double figures for the season. "He's been a fantastic focal point for us recently, and he truly deserves his goals. His work rate and hold-up play have been excellent," he added.

"The delivery from Ethan was superb – a spot-on ball. It’s rewarding to see someone in good form find the right place at the right time to get us a goal. I also thought Johnny Kenny, when he came on, showed great glimpses of his ability. In fact, all the substitutions – Ruben Rodrigues, Josh Sheehan – were impactful. We felt the game was playing into their hands, suiting their style. We had to go more direct. We didn't have much control of possession at the start of the second half, and it was tough to find space. When we made those changes, Ibrahim Cissoko did well on the left. Ruben and Josh brought quality and composure on the ball, and Johnny provided that attacking threat. I really believe the substitutions made a significant difference today."

Regarding Bonham, who made an impressive nine saves on the day, the Bolton boss was full of praise. "We absolutely needed him. I think that's the most shots anyone has had against us this season, and probably the most on target. He was outstanding. One of his saves, where he parried it and then reacted to get the second ball, was a truly top-class, brave save.

"That's precisely why we brought him here. In these tight games, they're often decided by small margins, and sometimes you just need your goalkeeper to make a crucial save. He did that, and I'm delighted for him."

Now, over to you! Do you agree with Schumacher that Bolton deserved a point purely based on their effort, or do you think Lincoln did enough to secure all three? What are your thoughts on the impact of substitutions in such tight matches? Let us know in the comments below!
