After years of tireless effort, Gibraltar Rugby has finally achieved a monumental victory, securing its place among the elite in European rugby! This marks a significant milestone for the Gibraltar Rugby Football Union (GRFU), which has been accepted as the 49th member of Rugby Europe. It's a testament to their dedication and perseverance. Additionally, Greece has had its membership reinstated after a lengthy absence.
The GRFU's journey to this moment has been a long one, dating back to their first friendly match against Belgium U23s in 2011. They faced numerous challenges, often finding themselves in difficult situations. But this time, support came from unexpected places, including the legendary Italian rugby player Sergio Parisse. Now, Gibraltar can finally participate in official Test matches and enjoy the benefits of Rugby Europe membership.
Gibraltar's acceptance followed a two-thirds majority vote. This opens doors to funding, training, and educational support, as well as participation in Rugby Europe tournaments. Previously, Gibraltarian national teams were limited to friendly matches. For instance, the senior men's team traveled to Finland and Denmark this year and hosted Jamaica, while the senior women's team played against the Met Police. The GRFU covered all associated costs.
Here's an interesting fact: Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory with a population of approximately 40,000, operates under the same eligibility rules as the Home Nations, adhering to World Rugby’s Regulation 8 criteria.
According to GRFU Head of Marketing, Stuart Porro, this achievement is the culmination of over 15 years of hard work. He emphasized the support from Rugby Europe's leadership and the GRFU's commitment to contributing actively to the sport's growth. Porro highlighted the strong rugby community in Gibraltar and the ambition to boost the game domestically.
The Gibraltar Rugby Men's Championship currently features a four-team competition and has included Spanish teams in the past. There are also numerous Vets teams and a Barbarians team, and the Gibraltar 7s is a well-established event.
Porro added that this achievement provides a clear pathway for young players, making a huge difference. Honorary President Stephen Payas celebrated this as a landmark win, emphasizing its aspirational and transformational impact, opening a new chapter for the sport and the community.
