A critical health alert has been issued in Glasgow, with hospital staff now required to wear face masks due to a surge in flu cases and the emergence of concerning outbreaks. This comes as a response to the rising number of patients exhibiting flu symptoms across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) hospitals.
The situation has escalated, with some wards forced to close due to outbreaks. In an email sent to staff on December 5th, bosses instructed all clinical area workers to don Fluid Resistant Surgical Masks (FRSM) for the entirety of their shifts, not just during patient interactions.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the mask mandate is aimed at curbing the spread of the virus, it also underscores the severity of the flu strain circulating this winter. Public Health Scotland statistics reveal a staggering 70% increase in hospital admissions due to influenza, with cases more than doubling in a week.
The strain, known as influenza A (H3N2), is notorious for causing severe illness, especially among older adults. With the flu season starting a month earlier than usual, early data suggests this strain may have mutated, potentially contributing to its increased virulence.
In response, NHSGGC has elevated its flu activity level to high and is urging the public to get vaccinated. The mask mandate is an additional measure to protect vulnerable patients and reduce viral transmission.
And this is the part most people miss... The advice extends beyond hospital staff. NHSGGC is encouraging all visitors to their hospitals to wear FRSM, similar to the masks used during the COVID-19 pandemic. This unified approach is in line with actions taken by other Scottish Health Boards.
NHSGGC spokesperson emphasizes, "While our staff are working tirelessly to address these challenges, we need visitors' help to reduce the virus's spread and protect our vulnerable patients."
Executive Director of Nursing, Professor Angela Wallace, adds, "Flu season is upon us, and we want to ensure the protection of you, your loved ones, and those most at risk. Wearing a mask when visiting a hospital or following our simple guidelines if you have symptoms is a powerful way to contribute to virus containment."
The situation remains under review, and NHSGGC will provide updates as they become available. However, they stress that the most effective way to protect against flu is to get vaccinated if eligible.
