Navigating roundabouts can be a challenging task for drivers of all experience levels, and alarming statistics show that many are making fundamental errors that could lead to hefty fines. In fact, a recent study conducted by Compare the Market reveals that one in six motorists finds roundabouts to be a source of stress during their travels.
This study also highlights a worrying trend: nearly six million drivers are reportedly not adhering to the established rules of roundabout usage, putting themselves at risk of receiving a £50 fine. According to the findings, a significant number of drivers fail to yield to traffic approaching from the right at roundabouts—an essential rule that is clearly outlined in Rule 185 of the Highway Code, which states, "Always give priority to the traffic coming from the right, unless you have been directed otherwise by signs, road markings, or traffic lights."
Moreover, the situation is compounded for UK licence holders, with over half (55%) potentially facing similar penalties for improper navigation of mini-roundabouts. Alarmingly, almost half (48%) of those surveyed admitted to driving over raised mini-roundabouts, while around two-thirds (62%) reported doing so on flat ones. This behavior directly contradicts Rules 188 to 190 of the Highway Code, which affirm that the regulations for mini-roundabouts mirror those of standard roundabouts. It’s crucial for drivers to remember that all vehicles should navigate around the central markings unless they are too large to do so. Due to the limited space and time available while maneuvering around mini-roundabouts, extra caution is necessary.
Julie Daniels, part of the car insurance team at Compare the Market, emphasizes the importance of understanding proper roundabout procedures: "While you can approach a roundabout with the same caution as any other intersection, it is regarded as a more complex maneuver. It’s quite surprising how many drivers lack awareness of correct signaling and actions, or simply disregard the rules intended to ensure their safety and that of others on the road.
We strongly encourage all drivers to revisit and refresh their knowledge regarding the appropriate protocols for using roundabouts to avoid fines and reduce the risk of accidents. Besides mastering the necessary maneuvers, it’s essential to lower your speed and provide yourself ample time to react. Stay vigilant for pedestrian crossings, cyclists, and other drivers who may be navigating the roundabout incorrectly.
