Jayson Tatum is still not ready to make his return to the Boston Celtics this season, according to Brad Stevens, the team’s president. This update came during a press conference held at the Celtics’ practice facility in Boston on Friday.
Tatum, who is 27 years old, suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon nearly nine months ago on May 12, while playing in the NBA Playoffs. His injury occurred during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks, where he had to be assisted off the court after the incident. The Knicks ultimately won that series in six games.
Stevens acknowledged that Tatum has met many important rehabilitation milestones and is progressively increasing his activity levels. However, he emphasized that there is still a considerable journey ahead before Tatum can return to the court. "He’s hit a lot of the thresholds. He’s doing more and more and will continue to do more and more. He’s still got a ways to go," Stevens stated, indicating that the recovery process is ongoing.
Despite Tatum's absence for the majority of the current season, the Celtics have exceeded expectations, currently finding themselves tied with the Knicks for second place in the Eastern Conference, led by Jaylen Brown.
Stevens remarked, "Obviously any team with Jayson Tatum is going to be better." When pressed about a potential timeline for Tatum's comeback, he responded, "When he's ready, he's ready."
The focus remains on Tatum's health and readiness for a successful return to play. Stevens elaborated, saying, "When is best for Jayson Tatum to come back? It’s best for Jayson Tatum to come back when he’s 110 percent healthy, fully cleared by everyone who matters in that decision, and feels at ease about it. That’s it."
