In a bold move that has captured attention, the Los Angeles Lakers, a storied franchise with 17 NBA championships to their name, are looking to draw inspiration from their city counterparts, the back-to-back World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. This collaboration comes as the Lakers navigate through their basketball operations in the wake of significant ownership changes.
Rob Pelinka, who serves as the president of basketball operations and general manager for the Lakers, recently opened up about this partnership while preparing for a game against the Golden State Warriors. This marked his first opportunity to address reporters since the official announcement in late October regarding Dodgers owner Mark Walter’s acquisition of the Lakers, which was valued at an impressive $10 billion.
Pelinka expressed enthusiasm over having allies from outside their organization—particularly pointing to the success achieved by the Dodgers. "It’s been fantastic to have advocates like the Dodgers, whose accomplishments provide us with valuable insights. Being able to connect with someone as knowledgeable as Andrew Friedman for best practices has been a tremendous advantage," he stated.
Friedman, the Dodgers' president of baseball operations, has been with the team since 2014, shortly after Walter bought the franchise from Frank McCourt in 2012. Pelinka praised Friedman’s remarkable intellect and the effectiveness he has brought to the Dodgers, stating, "He has done an incredible job securing championships for the Dodgers. Having another team leader to consult on roster movements or staff decisions has proven to be an invaluable resource."
Beyond just fostering a relationship with Friedman, Pelinka mentioned discussions with Walter and Jeanie Buss, the acting governor of the Lakers, about potential support for the team moving forward, particularly this summer. Buss is expected to remain in her role for at least four additional seasons beyond the current campaign, which runs until 2026.
"When Mark purchased the team, Jeanie and I conducted an in-depth discussion with him concerning areas where he aims to expand and become more aggressive. Observing how the Dodgers have structured their organization has served as an excellent model for us,” Pelinka noted. “We are still exploring how we will approach the offseason and what enhancements we will implement, but positive changes are on the horizon as we continue to build."
While Pelinka hinted at mimicking the Dodgers’ drafting strategies and farm system structure, he made it clear that the decision-making hierarchy within the Lakers will be primarily led by himself and Jeanie Buss, with the backing of Mark Walter.
The Lakers currently operate with a leaner front office compared to many other teams in the league. Following Magic Johnson's unexpected resignation in 2019, Pelinka has taken the reins as the main decision-maker, with Kurt Rambis serving as a senior basketball advisor. The situation in the front office became even less populated in November when the Lakers parted ways with Joey Buss, their former alternate governor and vice president of research and development, as well as Jesse Buss, an assistant general manager, alongside several members of the scouting team.
Looking ahead, Pelinka has plans to follow the Dodgers' example by expanding his executive team. "The Dodgers have meticulously crafted a robust front office, and they spare no expense in striving to create the best possible organizational structure in the league," he commented.
As the trade deadline looms, Pelinka addressed the Lakers’ strategy, especially regarding their roster for the upcoming summer, when the team will hold three future first-round picks and approximately $50 million in projected cap space.
Regarding the recent trade that sent Gabe Vincent and a second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Luke Kennard, Pelinka remarked, "Adding the top shooter in the league to our roster mid-season presents an exciting opportunity, and we took advantage of it."
He also discussed other potential moves that could have materialized before the deadline: "I would describe our approach as aggressive. In fact, being aggressive can also mean declining offers that may not align with our long-term vision for the team, even if it means passing on a player who could provide a quick fix."
On positioning for the summer, Pelinka acknowledged the challenges posed by the league’s new dual-apron system, which has proven to be quite restrictive. "It’s apparent to everyone that this new system can create unintended complexities. We believe that maintaining flexibility now positions us well for this offseason. Some teams have ventured too far into the apron territory and may find themselves in challenging situations. This could create opportunities for us to acquire talented players who might become available as teams look to alleviate salary pressures."
Finally, regarding the Lakers’ interest in the buyout market, Pelinka shared, "We are currently assessing our open 15th roster spot and expect to fill it before long."
