The Detroit Tigers are making moves, and the buzz is all about potentially adding free-agent pitcher Lucas Giolito to their roster! This offseason, the Tigers, who already snagged former Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen, are reportedly in talks with Giolito, who also recently pitched for Boston.
According to a report by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Tigers are actively discussing a deal with the right-handed starting pitcher. Giolito, at 31 years old, signed with the Red Sox in January 2024. He missed the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury. However, he bounced back in 2025, showcasing his talent with a 10-4 record, a 3.41 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, and 121 strikeouts across 145 innings pitched in 26 starts. That's a pretty impressive comeback!
The report states, "The Detroit Tigers continue to explore the starting-pitching market, talking to free-agent right-handers Lucas Giolito and Chris Bassitt, among others, according to a person briefed on their conversations.” However, there's a potential snag: the Tigers' plans might shift depending on the outcome of their arbitration case with left-hander Tarik Skubal. If they lose and end up paying Skubal $32 million instead of $19 million, it could impact their ability to bring in Giolito. But here's where it gets controversial...
The New York Yankees are also reportedly in the mix for Giolito. A deal with either the Tigers or the Yankees would be a reunion of sorts for the one-time All-Star. If Giolito goes to Detroit, he'd be teaming up with his former Harvard-Westlake High teammate, right-hander Jack Flaherty. If he signs with the Yankees, he'd reunite with another former teammate, lefty Max Fried.
What do you think? Will Giolito be a good fit for the Tigers or the Yankees? Do you think the potential financial implications of the Skubal arbitration case will significantly impact the Tigers' chances? Share your thoughts in the comments!
