The recent buzz surrounding a new signing by Stardom, the acclaimed promotion specializing in women's wrestling from Japan, has fans on the edge of their seats. This excitement stems from the speculation that the mystery talent could be none other than Dakota Kai, a beloved figure in both AEW and the indie wrestling scene. Known for her engaging presence as a gamer and streamer, Dakota has been a free agent since last year, previously competing under the name Evie in Stardom before joining WWE.
Interestingly, I initially pondered whether Mercedes Martinez was looking to revive her rejected RETRIBUTION persona in Japan. However, the longer teasers unveiled during Stardom's recent events featured an individual energetically downing energy drinks, suggesting it pointed towards a certain outspoken former pop idol turned wrestler. This individual had a notable stint with Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling until mid-last year and has made several appearances in AEW between 2021 and 2023, along with regular showings for GCW. Today, on January 10th, Stardom officially revealed this enigmatic figure: Maki Itoh, during an event at Korakuen Hall.
In a moment that fans have eagerly anticipated, Itoh showcased her professionalism alongside Stardom's president, Taro Okada, as she held up her contract while donning a sleek new tracksuit. "After spending nine years in the wrestling industry, this marks my first time joining this organization. I’m thrilled to be a part of Stardom! Nice to meet you all!" she announced, generating immediate excitement among the crowd.
Before stepping into the wrestling ring, Itoh was a member of LinQ, an idol group known for their carefully curated images, a common trait in the girl groups popular in Japan and South Korea. After parting ways with the group in 2017, she cleverly used this experience to shape her wrestling persona. Her character, dubbed "The Cutest in the World," is not only charming but also known for her colorful language, which has endeared her to fans, particularly on social media platforms. In her previous promotion, TJPW, she captured the International Princess title twice and briefly held the Tag Team titles alongside Miyu Yamashita.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Itoh's debut match with Stardom, set to take place tomorrow at Korakuen Hall, where she will team up with Saori Anou against opponents Aya Sakura and Sayaka Kurara. Are you as excited as I am to see what Maki Itoh will bring to the Stardom roster?
