Get ready for a weather event that's about to shake things up in the Seattle area! We're talking about an atmospheric river, a massive weather phenomenon, that's set to bring some serious changes to the region. This isn't your average rainfall; it's a 7,000-mile-long monster, one of the longest ever recorded, and it's heading straight for Washington state.
Professor Cliff Mass, an atmospheric sciences expert from the University of Washington, is sounding the alarm. He describes the forecasts as "serious" and backed by some alarming satellite imagery and unusually aligned weather models. Mass appeared on The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red 770 AM to shed light on this impending weather event.
"It's going to be intense," Mass said. "Some areas in the central and southern Cascades could see over a foot of rain. Many places will receive more than eight or nine inches." He went on to explain that several major rivers, like the Snoqualmie and the Cowlitz, are expected to reach flood stage, and in some spots, they might even break all-time record flood levels.
The rainfall maps and NOAA's Northwest River Forecast Center's warnings align, projecting ten rivers to reach major flood stage, a significant increase from just two days ago.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Seattle itself might initially escape the brunt of the rain due to a temporary rain shadow, the further you venture towards the mountains, the worse it's going to get. Mass explains, "By the time you reach Carnation, the rainfall will be much more intense. Head further into the mountains, and it could double or even triple."
And this is the part most people miss... It's not just the rain; it's the wind that will accompany this system. Gusts of 30-40 mph are expected, but Mass emphasizes that the primary concern is the flooding. Forecasts from The Washington Post support this, showing this belt of moisture stretching from the Philippines to the Pacific Northwest, with rainfall exceeding a foot in portions of Washington and Oregon. By Wednesday, we could see near-record river crests, and the atmospheric river's peak intensity might reach Category 4 or 5, the highest on the scale.
Mass highlights an unusually high confidence level in these forecasts. "We're close enough to the event now that all the models are in agreement. They're all pointing to heavy precipitation. It's going to happen."
But there's a silver lining to this weather event. Mass expects pulses of rain through Wednesday morning, with the worst flooding arriving after the heaviest precipitation. "One good thing about all this is that our major reservoirs will be filled up. The Yakima reservoir system, which is currently a little below normal, will be topped up. We'll be heading into winter with well-prepared reservoirs. All we need now is a little snow, and we'll be in great shape for next year."
This event will put an end to any lingering drought talk, according to Mass. "The drought is over. If anyone continues to talk about drought now, they're misleading you. Our reservoirs will refill rapidly."
