Bold start: a musical coming-of-age journey that will redefine how games feel, sound, and resonate with your teenage memories.
Mixtape, the melodic adventure from Beethoven and Dinosaur, remains on the horizon for spring 2026 after a delay from its originally targeted 2025 window. The latest trailer confirms a new kickoff date of May 7, 2026, and the title will land on the same broad slate of platforms players expect: Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Johnny Galvatron, the project’s director, recently spoke with Engadget about translating that unmistakable mood of late-teen ennui into a video game. He explained that exploring idleness—an everyday part of adolescence that often feels unproductive or stagnant—presents a unique challenge for interactive storytelling. The team deliberately crafted a game that captures those long, aimless hours and the small, often imperfect moments that define youth.
Central to Mixtape is its soundtrack, which sits at the heart of the experience. The game follows three friends on the cusp of high school graduation, using music as a throughline to shape mood, memory, and choices. Players can expect to encounter songs from legendary punk and alternative acts, including DEVO, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Smashing Pumpkins, and Iggy Pop, among others. The soundtrack isn’t merely background; it drives scenes, fuels emotions, and anchors the narrative in a distinctly retro, authentic atmosphere.
As a creative concept, Mixtape entwines narrative beats with classic tracks to evoke that era’s energy and tensions. The result aims to deliver not just a game but a cultural portal—where you relive or discover the soundtrack-driven magic of late adolescence.
Which platform would you jump in on first to savor the music and the story: PC, consoles, or a portable Switch session, and why? And does a tight, era-accurate soundtrack make or break a coming-of-age game for you?
