Power Outages Persist, Testing Nashville's Patience
As the bitter cold grips Nashville, residents are losing hope with each passing day. Winter Storm Fern has plunged the city into darkness, and the frustration is palpable. Thousands of Nashville Electric Service (NES) customers are enduring freezing temperatures, and the question on everyone's lips is: When will the power be restored?
On January 30, NES CEO Teresa Broyles-Aplin unveiled a new outage map, promising a more detailed update and restoration estimates. However, with over 59,000 customers still without power, the situation remains dire. Crews are battling against time and the elements to repair ice-damaged lines, but the progress is slow.

Prioritizing Repairs: A Complex Task
NES officials report that over 1,100 linemen and 350 vegetation crews, along with National Guardsmen, are working tirelessly. The prioritization process begins with large-scale outage groups and critical facilities like nursing homes. Smaller crews then focus on individual outages in otherwise repaired areas.
Brandon Whitlock, NES operations manager, explains the need for this system to maintain efficiency. However, the sheer scale of the storm's damage has made this a daunting task, and the progress is slower than many would like.
The Threat of Secondary Outages
As if the situation wasn't challenging enough, the possibility of secondary outages looms. Broken power poles can take up to 10 hours to repair, and crews may need to temporarily shut off power during reconnections. This means that even after power is restored, it may not be a permanent fix.
Union Disputes and Miscommunication
Adding fuel to the fire, the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) claims NES turned away their offer of additional lineman support. Broyles-Aplin refutes this, stating that NES is union-friendly and has no issues with any union. This dispute highlights the tension and potential for misinformation during times of crisis.
And this is the part most people miss: NES customers have received false texts stating their power is back, causing further frustration. Broyles-Aplin acknowledges this issue and has disabled the mass text system to prevent further errors.
