Nathan Van Hooydonck's Journey: From Cardiac Arrest to Cycling's New Role
In the summer of 2023, Belgian pro cyclist Nathan Van Hooydonck, known for his impressive performances at the Spring Classics and his support for Team Jumbo-Visma's Jonas Vingegaard in the Tour de France, was full of promise. But fate had other plans.
Two months later, while driving home in Belgium with his pregnant wife, Van Hooydonck suffered a massive cardiac arrest, crashing the car and nearly losing his life. After emergency surgeries and a long recovery, he had to accept that his racing career was over.
Fast forward two years, and Van Hooydonck is back, but in a different role. He's joined the commercial department of his former team, Visma-Lease a Bike, and works in hospitality, guiding VIP guests at races. He also does media work, including commentary for TNT Sports.
But the road to recovery wasn't easy. Van Hooydonck had to recover from multiple surgeries and manage the mental aspect of his condition. He gradually returned to cycling, albeit at a more leisurely pace, and learned to listen to his body.
His cardiologist gave him clear guidelines on exercise, and he now knows his limits. He's been fitted with an internal defibrillator to monitor his heart, and he's learned to appreciate the value of a healthy body and mind.
Despite his retirement from racing, Van Hooydonck still has a competitive spirit. He enjoys the thrill of racing, but he's also grateful for the opportunity to learn new skills and take on different challenges.
He's been working hard to learn the basics of a desk-based job, and he's found a new role within the commercial department. He's also been figuring out what kind of role he'd like within the team, while also picking up the basics of a more desk-based job.
Van Hooydonck's experience is a reminder that even super-fit individuals are not immune to heart issues. He urges anyone taking on a major endurance challenge to see a cardiologist first, as the risk of a heart attack goes beyond those who've already had an issue.
His story is a testament to the importance of taking care of your body and mind, and it's a powerful reminder that sometimes, life can change in an instant.
