Newcastle United's transfer ambitions are heating up, with a potential £35 million move for Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini gaining serious momentum. Following a recent injury to Fabian Schar, the Magpies are actively seeking defensive reinforcements, and Scalvini, a highly-regarded young talent, has re-emerged on their radar. But, he is not the only Atalanta player on their list.
Scalvini, considered one of Italy's most promising young players, has unfortunately been plagued by injuries since his debut in the 2021/22 season. Despite making 113 appearances and earning 8 caps for Italy, his progress has been hampered by various setbacks. Over the last season and a half, he's only played in 14 matches, though his recent return is timely for Atalanta, who currently sit seventh in Serie A.
Newcastle is carefully evaluating Scalvini, having followed his career closely. They are keen to secure his signature if a deal becomes feasible. The club is considering bringing in a new defender this month, but only if they are already familiar with the player. The injury to Fabian Schar has intensified their concerns about their defensive options. Schar sustained an ankle ligament injury during a match, and is likely to be sidelined for a while.
In positive news, the initial assessment of Schar's injury suggests it might not be as severe as initially feared. Howe stated that a specialist will provide definitive answers in the coming days.
Beyond Scalvini, Newcastle is also interested in other Atalanta players. Dan Burn is also out due to a broken rib and a punctured lung, but he is expected to return by February. A recall of Matt Targett from Middlesbrough is also a consideration as a short-term solution. However, Newcastle would only pursue this option if they are unable to sign a replacement.
The Italian side has reportedly placed a £35 million (€40m, $47m) price tag on Scalvini, whose current contract extends until June 2028. Newcastle has been closely monitoring Atalanta for the past couple of years, with Scalvini being just one of three targets they admire.
In addition to the 6ft 4in centre-half, the Magpies are also interested in Brazilian midfielder Ederson, aiming to strengthen their midfield. Furthermore, young Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor has also caught their attention. Ahanor's versatility, being able to play as a centre-half or left-back, appeals to Newcastle, though Scalvini remains their primary target.
But here's where it gets controversial... Arsenal is reportedly vying with Manchester City for the signing of a Newcastle player, potentially leading to a £60 million exit. This could strain Howe's relationship with the club's hierarchy.
And this is the part most people miss... Newcastle is now well-positioned to invest significantly in the market, with plans to spend up to £300 million on new signings over the next two transfer windows. A major signing could arrive this month, although a substantial bid will be necessary to secure one of Europe's top young midfielders, with competition from Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.
