India's cricket team faces a significant challenge as wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand due to a right-side strain injury. The injury occurred during India's practice session, where Pant was batting for nearly 50 minutes, demonstrating his focus and organization. However, a painful blow to his ribcage, sustained while facing a delivery from a throwdown specialist, forced him to leave the nets. Initial scans and assessments revealed a side strain, which has unfortunately led to his absence from the series.
Pant's absence is a notable setback, especially considering his recent performances. He had been in exceptional form, leading Delhi to the knockouts in the 2025/26 Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) league stage in Bengaluru. During this tournament, he showcased his batting prowess, scoring two half-centuries against Services and Railways. This is the second time Pant has been sidelined by injuries, having previously suffered a right foot fracture during the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Despite this, he made a successful return to the field in the two-match Test series against South Africa at home in November last year.
Despite the injury concerns, Pant had been a consistent member of India's ODI setup for the past two years. His inclusion in the squad for the ODIs against New Zealand had been a topic of speculation, but the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided to retain him. However, with Pant now ruled out, the Indian team management must now find a suitable replacement. Two potential candidates are Dhruv Jurel and Ishan Kishan, both of whom have impressed in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The series will commence at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara, marking the venue's first men's international game. The second ODI will take place at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on January 14, followed by the third and final match at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on January 18.
