The Cost of Reliability
The cost of maintaining this high level of reliability falls on consumers. Grid operators' incomes are linked to the value of their networks, and these values are approved by official regulators. As a result, consumers bear the brunt of the significant investment costs required to maintain this reliability.
A Trade-Off

Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism (FERM)

However, it will also underwrite new battery projects and keep the Torrens Island gas-powered generator online, preventing potential brownouts or extraordinarily high prices.
Water Bills: A Similar Story
The issue of rising costs extends beyond energy. South Australians are also facing a $112 hike in their SA Water bills this financial year due to network investments. Minister Nick Champion emphasizes the need for continuous investment to maintain the functionality of the water network, especially with new housing developments.
