The survey, conducted by Talker Research, surveyed 2,000 Americans and uncovered some intriguing insights into the world of phone backgrounds. What makes this particularly interesting is the generational divide in how these backgrounds are perceived.
The Judges and the Judged
An astonishing 33% of Gen Z Americans admitted to judging someone based on their phone background, with 17% of millennials agreeing. This suggests that younger generations are more likely to use phone backgrounds as a form of non-verbal communication, revealing something about the person's personality or lifestyle.
The top phone backgrounds, according to the survey, were:
- Family members and children (19%)
- Nature and landscapes (11%)
- Personal photos and memories (11%)
- Pets (10%)
- Default wallpapers (10%)
- Romantic partner (7%)
- TV shows, movies, etc. (5%)
The Default Dilemma
The survey also explored the perception of those with default phone backgrounds. Interestingly, 12% of Americans who judge phone backgrounds negatively view default backgrounds as a sign of lack of creativity or inspiration. However, a third of these respondents saw default backgrounds as practical and minimalist, indicating a preference for simplicity and efficiency.
A quarter of the respondents believed that default backgrounds signify a view of the phone as a purely functional tool, devoid of personal expression. And 22% simply found them meaningless.
