ZRA Debuts Mobile Tax Camps to Bring Services Closer to Zanzibar Communities
Zanzibar Revenue Authority (ZRA) has rolled out a network of mobile tax service camps, branded as "ZRA Mtaani Kwako" (ZRA in Your Neighborhood), stationed at multiple sites to simplify public access to revenue services. The goal is to lessen the burden on residents who typically spend long hours traveling to regional offices for essential assistance.
During an outreach session in Chuini, Makame Khamis Moh’d, ZRA’s Head of Information, Public Relations and Customer Service, explained that the authority chose to bring services nearer to people in order to save time and allow residents to continue their daily routines with minimal disruption.
Although ZRA already maintains regional offices, there is a recognized need to further decentralize by delivering services directly to business hubs and neighborhoods. This strategy demonstrates ZRA’s commitment to improved service delivery and ensuring tax-related support reaches all citizens efficiently.
Makame encouraged locals to fully utilize these mobile camps, noting that they offer fast, convenient access to assistance at times that fit everyday life.
The mobile camps provide services that would otherwise require citizens to travel significant distances to regional offices. Available offerings include business registration, tax education and advisory services, driver’s license processing, tax payments, and guidance on obtaining new vehicle registration numbers.
Residents visiting the Chuini Daladala Station camp in West A District, Unguja Urban West Region, expressed appreciation for the government’s initiative. They observed that the mobile camps help reduce crowding at ZRA offices while promoting more efficient service delivery.
Yussuf Simon of Chuini praised ZRA for bringing services closer, noting the rapid and smooth processing at the mobile camp. "The service is exceptionally quick—much faster than the lengthy waits at the office," he remarked.
Suleiman Mohammed Ali from Mbuzini urged motor vehicle owners who have not yet updated their registration numbers to take advantage of the opportunity, highlighting that the camps make compliance far easier.
The six-day camp at Chuini Bus Terminal launches a series of similar opportunities for residents across Zanzibar. The ZRA Mtaani Kwako program is planned to expand first to North and South Unguja and eventually to Pemba Island, ensuring nationwide access to essential revenue services. Through this initiative, the government aims to boost tax compliance, enhance public understanding of revenue laws, and improve overall service delivery across Zanzibar.
